T-shirt printing

Workshop leader: Ellie Curtis

A 1 day workshop learning how screenprint, printing your own t-shirts or fabric. Bring along your own drawings, images and designs and turn them into screenprints onto t-shirts, bags or fabric.

Suitable for complete beginners or those with previous screenprinting knowledge but who feel they need refreshing.

Screenprint refresher

Workshop leader: Ann Norfield

A refresher for those who want to remind themselves of screenprinting processes. During the day you can make a two-layer print using a paper stencil and an image exposed on photo-sensitive emulsion. Along the way you will learn how to mix inks, use a screenbed, coat a screen and use a UV exposure unit.

Bookbinding

Workshop leader: Richard Roberts

The course covers the essential techniques and skills for hardcover bookbinding. Each student will make a hand-stiched, multi-sectioned book bound in hard covers. This workshop will give you the skills to progress on to any level of bookbinding.

Reduction linocut

Workshop leader: Nick Morley

In this hands-on workshop you will produce a 3-colour linocut the reduction way. This technique uses one piece of lino, carving away more areas between each printing stage to develop the image. You will learn how to plan an image, how to make different marks with lino tools, how to ink up the lino with a roller and how to register a multi-layer print. Lino, inks, paper and tools are provided or participants can bring their own tools.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some previous printmaking experience. Please note this workshop uses solvents (white spirit).

Longer daytime courses

Drypoint and carborundum

Workshop leader: Ann Norfield

In this intaglio workshop you can learn to layer the exciting drawn line of drypoint with the painterly coloured background of carborundum. Over the two days we will draw into aluminium plates, learn to ink up and print using two or three layers of colour on rich carborundum and incorporate chine colle (paper collage) into the finished image. It worked for Picasso, Miro Jasper Johns and Tapies and can work for you too!

T-shirt and fabric printing

A 2-day workshop covering screenprinting on t-shirts, and screenprinting repeat patterns on fabric. Bring your own designs, images or photographs to create your own prints on t-shirts, bags and fabric. The first session will be focused on t-shirts, and the second session will be focused on making your own repeat patterns for fabric that can then be used for fashion or interiors.

Suitable for complete beginners to screenprinting or those with previous knowledge of screenprinting but who feel they need refreshing.

Screenprinting on paper and t-shirt printing

Workshop leader: Lydie Gallais

On the first day you will learn:

  • How to expose and coat a screen using photo emulsion
  • How to use colours efficiently and mix them well
  • How to print using a 2- or 3-colour registration

You will need to bring an image (A4 or A3). The image could be a drawing, a photo, a newspaper print... It should be of good quality, photocopied onto either acetate or paper.

On the second day you will learn:

  • How to use inks and mix them well
  • To print on fabric using the table or screenprinting bed
  • How to use registration well

You will need to bring some tee shirts or anything else you would like to print (i.e. bags, tea towels...). Some materials will be provided but I suggest that you bring some tee shirts.

A course full of information from beginners to advanced. A lot of fun.

Introduction to screenprinting on paper

Photopolymer

Workshop leader: Victoria Browne

This two-day course will introduce participants to the unique qualities of photopolymer, a water-based photosensitive plate adapted for relief and intaglio techniques. Participants will work with two different images:

  • Session 1: flexography (relief) plate
  • Session 2: printing
  • Session 3: polymergravure (etching) plate
  • Session 4: printing

Plates, ink, paper and printing materials will be provided. However a basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop software is required.

Introduction to screenprinting

Workshop leader: Victoria Browne

This course is recommended for those with little or no experience of silk-screen printing. Participants will be taught the basic techniques of operating an exposure unit and using a flat-bed press, via hands-on sessions where they produce images of their own choosing (or indeed design). By mastering these basic skills participants will be able not only to organically develop the entire array of printing skills while learning how to avoid accidents. Any black and white (including half-toned) images or hand drawings for post cards, business cards, birthday presents, etc. up to A4 size are welcome to be brought for use as source material for printing.

Introduction to printmaking

Over the three days you will be introduced to a range of print processes that will enable you to engage with the creative potential of printmaking as a means of expression. The aim of the course is for each participant to gain an insight into the techniques covered, providing the skills and confidence to continue to pursue printmaking independently after the course. The techniques covered are linocut, etching and screenprint

Etching

Workshop leader: Nick Morley

In this workshop you will work on an etching plate, taking it through several processes under the guidance of an experienced tutor. You will make a print at each stage of the process. You will learn how to make line drawings using hard ground, add textures and patterns using soft ground and work with aquatint to add tones. On the last session you will have a chance to apply what you have learnt to a new plate to create a new image.

This workshop uses zinc plates, etched with nitric acid.

  • Session 1: Working with hard ground, etching and printing
  • Session 2: Soft ground and aquatint
  • Session 3: Consolidation and application - working on a new plate

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

Note: This workshop uses some solvents and nitric acid.

Japanese woodblock I (beginners)

Workshop leader: Wuon Gean Ho

Japanese woodblock, or mokuhanga, is a non-toxic printmaking technique that has a great variety of beautiful effects, ranging from delicate washes of transparency, to bold vibrant colors. Using traditional tools, wood and paper, learn how to carve and print your own monochrome and multicoloured pictures, and bring a new twist to old printmaking traditions. Cost of the course includes a set of carving tools and hand printing disc (baren) to continue your printmaking at home.

Japanese woodblock II (intermediate)

This course is timed just after the end of Japanese woodblock I so that artists can continue to develop their woodblock technique. Additionally, those who have some knowledge of Japanese water-based woodblock printing are welcome. During the two sessions we will explore advanced printing and registration techniques and work on a larger scale. Artists are encouraged to bring individual projects that they would like to develop in this time.

Introduction to printmaking

Workshop leader: Victoria Browne

The techniques covered are as follows (not necessarily in order):

  • Drypoint (a similar technique to etching but without acid)
  • Hard ground etching
  • Soft ground etching
  • Aquatint
  • Linocut
  • Screenprint (paper stencils)
  • Screenprint (photo-stencil)

Etching will be using zinc with nitric acid. Oil-based inks and solvents (white spirit and meths) will also be used in some of the sessions.
